The Total Joint Center proudly welcomes Alex H. Shin to an established and trusted team. After medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed his residency at UPMC Pinnacle in Harrisburg, PA. He then furthered his training with fellowship at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA where he especially honed his skills with the most modern robotic hip and knee replacement technology as well as complex revision arthroplasty.
Strenuous activity on a repetitive basis can cause havoc on joints. This level of impact on an excessive basis can create pain or aggravate an existing injury.
Dr. Shin is looking forward to helping patients alleviate their pains and reclaim their quality of life. “Surgery is only one component of the stepwise care we can offer. I like to tell patients they’re the pilot, we’re just the mechanics and that surgery is always the patient’s choice” Dr. Shin says. Knee, hip, and shoulder replacements are the most common procedures he sees. For active patients with underlying arthritis, the arthritis itself can trigger a significant acute inflammatory response. Pain, swelling, discomfort and even difficulty with walking can accompany these flare-ups. A few protective measures include braces and ensuring the surrounding ligaments, muscles and tendons are well balanced to counteract the inflammation
Dr. Shin is encouraged by the extraordinary use of robotics in orthopedic surgery. “ Robotic total joint surgery has changed the game. It has provided intraoperative data and information previously not available to help eliminate potential deficiencies. It can optimize implant positioning to provide the best possible outcome.” Dr. Shin says.
“Robotics have perfected and guided the procedure itself allowing precise bone cuts. It has proven to be a powerful weapon in the ever-growing world of joint replacement surgery..” Dr. Shin noted. Moreover, he's passionate about helping patients heal. “I’m excited to help as many patients as I can. I want my patients to get back to living their lives with the least amount of pain and discomfort possible” Dr. Shin says.
Dr. Shin was born and raised in New Jersey. He loves sports and is a die-hard Knicks fan. He also roots for the NY Giants and Mets. “I grew up in Lawrenceville and went to Rutgers; It feels great to be back in the garden state. I’ve heard only great things about the practice here at OINJ. I really love the environment they instill and how they give back to the community. I look forward to give back what I can to the community that helped raise me.” Dr. Shin noted.
He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Shin has co-written abstracts and peer-reviewed publications pertaining to adult reconstruction.
