Christian J. Zaino, MD, Hand Surgeon, To Join the Physician Staff of The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey (OINJ)

Sep 27, 2017

Hackettstown, NJ — September 2017 — The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey (OINJ) is pleased to announce that Christian Joseph Zaino, MD, a hand surgeon, will be joining its staff in February 2018.

Dr. Zaino is a board eligible orthopedic surgeon who recently completed his fellowship in hand, upper extremity, and microscopic surgery at the University of Chicago. During his fellowship, he had additional training in congenital (pediatric) hand surgery at the National Children’s Hospital of Lima, Peru, and microscopic surgery at the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota.

He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center / Kings County Hospital of Brooklyn, where he served as chief resident, supervising residents and medical students as well as running the residents’ orthopedic service. During this time, he served as the team physician for the football teams of two Brooklyn high schools (one of which was his alma mater), published several peer-reviewed articles, and presented his research at national and international meetings. He completed his surgical internship at NYU Langone Medical Center / Bellevue Hospital Center in New York.

The doctor earned his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, where he was elected class president and gave the valedictory address at graduation. He had also earned his undergraduate degree from NYU, graduating with departmental honors and magna cum laude in architectural history and urban planning. While at NYU, Dr. Zaino minored in chemistry and studied abroad in London for two semesters.

Currently, Dr. Zaino is completing another fellowship in complex wrist reconstruction and arthroscopy at the Hand Institute of Auckland, New Zealand, with their country’s leading hand surgeon. He reports from there, “New Zealand has been an exceptional experience so far. The Kiwis have active lifestyles, which unfortunately lead to complex wrist injuries that warrant multifaceted wrist procedures to fix. Fortunately for me, I am working side-by-side with a pioneer in the field. Also, the country is terrific – wonderful people, exhilarating recreation, and great food – the lamb is delicious!”

Dr. Zaino and OINJ learned of each other through his fellowship training. “The director of Dr. Zaino’s fellowship program in Chicago called me to recommend him,” says Frank J. Corrigan, MD, a hand surgeon at OINJ recently designated a Top Doc 2017 by New Jersey Monthly. “Our connection? I went through the same fellowship program. The director said Dr. Zaino was looking to relocate to this area. When I spoke with Christian myself, I knew he would be a good fit for our group. He’s accomplished, he’s outgoing, and he knows the area well  — he’s spent summers on Long Beach Island since childhood. And his credentials speak for themselves — he’ll be an excellent physician for the community.”

“We are always on the lookout for hardworking new talent,” says Robert A. DeFalco, Jr., DO, a senior partner and another New Jersey Monthly Top Doc at OINJ. “Finding someone with recommendations from a known entity, as well as the practical and state-of-the-art training we require, is a plus.”

In addition to architecture and travelling, Dr. Zaino’s many interests — which include photography, cycling, snorkeling, off-roading, and building sand sculptures on LBI — ensure that he will be able to find a common bond with any patient.
